Downspout Placement: Why Location Matters

A downspout that empties right next to your foundation defeats much of the purpose of having gutters in the first place, the water just pools in a different spot.

Downspouts should direct water at least several feet away from the house, ideally toward a slope, drain, or area of the yard that can absorb it without affecting the foundation.

If your downspouts empty too close to the house, extensions are a simple, inexpensive fix that can prevent much bigger foundation problems down the road.
